MickeyMarcus(1902-1948)DavidDanielMickeyMarcus,atoughBrooklynstreetkid,rosebyvirtueofhiscourageandintelligencetohelpsaveIsraelin1948andbecomeitsfirstgeneralsinceJudahMaccabee.AfteradistinguishedcareerinmilitaryandpublicservicetotheUnitedStates,the46-year-oldMarcuswrotehisnameforeverintheannalsofIsraelihistory.Borntoimmigrantparentsin1902,MarcusgrewupintheBrownsvillesectionofBrooklynwhere,todefendhimselfagainstneighborhoodtoughs,helearnedtobox.HishighschoolathleticandacademicrecordwonhimadmissiontoWestPointin1920,fromwhichhegraduatedwithimpressivescores.Aftercompletinghisrequiredservice,Marcuswenttolawschoolandspentmostofthe1930sasaFederalattorneyinNewYork,helpingbringLuckyLucianotojustice.Asareward,MayorLaGuardianamedMarcusCommissionerofCorrectionsforNewYorkCity.Convincedthatwarwasimminent,MarcusvoluntarilywentbackintoArmyuniformin1940,andaftertheJapaneseattackonPearlHarborservedasexecutiveofficertothemilitarygovernorofHawaii.In1942,hewasnamedcommandantoftheArmy'snewRangerschool,whichdevelopedinnovativetacticsforjunglefighting.SenttoEnglandontheeveofD-Day,hevoluntarilyparachutedintoNormandywiththetroopsofthe101stAirborneDivision.MarcushelpeddrawupthesurrendertermsforItalyandGermanyandbecamepartoftheoccupationgovernmentinBerlin.AdmiringcolleaguesidentifiedhimasoneoftheWarDepartment'sbestbrains.HehadabrightfutureaheadofhimasamemberoftheArmy'stopbrass.In1944,Marcus'sconsciousnessofhimselfasaJewtookadramaticturnwhenhewasputinchargeofplanninghowtosustainthestarvingmillionsintheregionsliberatedbytheAlliedinvasionofEurope.AmajorpartofhisresponsibilitiesinvolvedclearingouttheNazideathcamps.Here,MarcuscamefacetofacewiththesurvivorsofNaziatrocitiesandsawwithhisowneyesthepilesofuncountedJewishcorpsesinEurope'sdeathcamps.Followingthatassignment,MarcuswasnamedchiefoftheWarCrimesDivision,planninglegalandsecurityproceduresfortheNurembergtrials.Throughtheseexperiences,MarcuscametounderstandthedepthsofEuropeananti-Semitism.ThoughneverpreviouslyaZionist,MarcusbecameconvincedthattheonlyhopefortheremnantsofEuropeanJewrylayinaJewishhomelandinPalestine.In1947,Marcusreturnedtocivilianlife.Afewmonthslater,theUnitedNationsauthorizedthepartitionofPalestineandtheeventualcreationofaJewishstate.Withindays,DavidBen-GurionaskedMarcustorecruitanAmericanofficertoserveasmilitaryadvisortoIsrael.Failinginhisattemptstorecruitoneofhisfriends,Marcusdecidedtovolunteerhimself.TheU.S.WarDepartmentgrantedMarcus,whowasareservist,permissiontoaccepttheoffer,providedMarcusnotusehisownnameorrankanddisguisehismilitaryrecord.Thus,one"MichaelStone"arrivedinTelAvivinJanuary1948,toconfrontanearlyimpossiblesituation.ThewidelyseparatedJewishsettlementsinPalestineweresurroundedbyaseaofhostileArabs.ThenewlycreatedIsraelwouldhavenodefensibleborders,noairpower,afewtanksandancientartillerypiecesandalmostnoarmsorammunition.TheHaganahwasaneffectiveundergroundorganizationbutithadnoexperienceasaregularnationalarmy.Facingitwerewell-suppliedArabarmiesdeterminedtodrivetheJewsintothesea.Thepro-ArabBritishadministrationinPalestinepreventedtheimportationofmilitarysuppliestotheIsraelis.Undaunted,StonedesignedacommandstructureforIsrael'snewarmyandwrotemanualstotrainit,adaptinghisexperienceatRangerschooltotheHaganah'sspecialneeds.HeidentifiedIsrael'sweakestpointsasthescatteredsettlementsintheNegevandthenewquarterofJerusalem.WhenIsraeldeclaredindependenceandtheArabarmiesattackedinMay1948,Israelwasready,thankstoStone'splanning.Hishit-and-runtacticskepttheEgyptianarmyintheNegevoffbalance.WhentheJewishsectionofJerusalemwasabouttofall,MarcusorderedtheconstructionofaroadtobringadditionalmenandequipmenttobreaktheArabsiegejustdaysbeforetheUnitedNationsnegotiatedaceasefire.IsraelhadwithstoodtheArabassaultwithitsbordersvirtuallyintact.Ingratitude,Ben-GurionnamedMarcusaLieutenantGeneral,thefirstgeneralinthearmyofIsraelinnearlytwothousandyears.Tragically,Marcusdidnotlivetoseethepeace.Sixhoursbeforetheceasefirebegan,inthevillageofAbuGhoshnearJerusalem,Marcuswasunabletosleep.Hewalkedbeyondtheguardedperimeterwrappedinhisbedsheet.AJewishsentrysawawhite-robedfigureapproachingand,notunderstandingMarcus'sresponse,firedasingle,fatalshot.Marcus'sbodywasflownbackforburialatWestPoint,wherehistombstoneidentifieshimas"ASoldierforAllHumanity."HollywoodwouldlaterimmortalizeMarcusinamovie,"CastAGiantShadow."Ben-Gurionputitsimply,"Hewasthebestmanwehad."
